Underwriter

In a mortgage application, the term underwriter refers to a person that works for the lending bank that reviews, verifies and makes decisions regarding the credit worthiness of a borrower.

The underwriter typically does not deal directly with the borrower, but rather with the broker or loan officer. Their job, ultimately, is to make sure that the bank is lending to a borrower that can pay back the loan.

An Underwriters job typically includes the following:

  • Verifying Borrower's Employment
  • Verifying Borrower's Assets
  • Insuring that the Home appraisal represents the actual value
  • Reviewing Income statements and insuring that the monthly income stated on the application is accurate
