At some point the term tract housing developed a negative connotation and became synonymous with bland cookie cutter "me too" type styling. America's large home builders of course haven't completely done away with tract housing, they have simply evolved it. Instead of every house being identical, home builders now have several different exterior fascias to choose from, and will dictate what color the stucco will be as to avoid having every house look identical.

You don't hear the term tract housing nearly as much as you used to, as it has been replace by terms like "master-planned" and "development".
