A REIT is a crafty Wall St. acronym standing for a Real Estate Investment Trust. In simple terms, a REIT is a security that sells in the same fashion as a stock via an exchange and invests its money in Real Estate or Mortgages. Non FNMA (Fannie Mae) mortgages are often times subsidized by REITS. Most of the subprime mortgages in this country were backed by REITS.
